FYI
The Utica/Rome Metro Area LWV has been aware of this issue of hydraulic
fracturing and would be most supportive of this being considered by our
national LWV as a need to protect safe air and water priority for 2010. We
support the Steuben LWV recommendation regarding protecting our air and
water nationwide as a priority for 2010. Both Mary Chapin and Sharen Barboza
from our LWV have been studying this issue and sharing information with our
board and other LWV members.

Co-President, Utica/Rome LWV

Dear Fellow Presidents,

We still have a chance to influence what national chooses at the board
meeting next week for 2010 priorities if we act in the next 48 hours.
Here's why.

Last week, before the 1/15 deadline, our Steuben chapter send a strong
recommendation for the following priority: passage of the FRAC Act (H.R.
2766 and S. 1215). Please click on the attachment now to see what it
consists of and why it is so important. Thank you.

To our pleasant surprise, Judy Duffy sent the following response:

Dear Susan,
Thank you for your League's recommendation of the passage of the FRAC
Act as a LWV advocacy priority for 2010. Are you aware of other Leagues
who are working on this issue? Clearly, these kinds of environmental
concerns are important.
Your suggestion will be included in a report to the board for
consideration next week.
Once again, thanks for your input.
Sincerely,
Judy Duffy

Since she asked about other Leagues, I think that gives all of you an
opportunity to speak up now and have your opinion be included in the
discussion next week. You could email her a very short message tomorrow
or Friday in support of the Steuben chapter's recommendation. I'm
suggesting mentioning us merely because it's too late to send in new
ideas yourselves. Yet you could piggyback onto ours and say something
about the need to protect our air and water nationwide. If you need
additional information, you can check the websites listed in item #1 of
the attachment to our original letter to Judy or call me at 607-739-9141.

Now I'm going to try to figure out how to send this message to state LWV
presidents in the states where hydrofracking is being done. Am I a
cockeyed optimist or what?

Susan Multer, Pres.
LWV of Steuben County

P.S. On a related topic, I hope those of you who live within 2 hours of
Albany are going to the statewide gas drilling rally at the capitol on
Monday at 10:30. We're leaving here on a 6 a.m. bus. If you don't know
about it and want to, please email me tonight.
