The Bill was introduced by New York City Council member David G. Greenfield and its main objective is to have the Department of Education provide voter registration forms to all families when they enroll their children into public schools. As this is a presidential election year and 2013 will be a city-wide election, now is a perfect time to encourage parents to get involved in the political process. This legislation makes it more convenient for parents who may be moving into New York City or moving from one school district to another to register for the first time, or to change or update their voter registration. It will also help young (and often single) and recently naturalized immigrant parents get more involved in a political process that affects the education of their children. Further, parents who feel empowered are more likely to feel that they are involved and engaged in their children's education and with the larger community.
