Current Action
The League has been involved in a range of health care issues at the state level, including:
- ACCESS AND FINANCING OF HEALTH CARE: Support of measures to maintain or expand access to a basic level of health care that is equitable, efficient, and economical, such as expansion of eligibility for the Child Health Plus program, support of measures to make prescription drugs affordable, including a measure that would prohibit insurance companies from providing lesser reimbursement for more expensive drugs and a measure to establish a prescription drug discount program,, support for permanent funding of school based health services, and opposition to cuts proposed to the Medicaid program;
- MENTAL HEALTH PARITY: Commercial insurance is required to cover mental health services. The League supports coverage fo such services by the state funded Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus programs.
- DISEASE PREVENTION AND PUBLIC HEALTH PROMOTION: Support for a public health measure to curtail sale of flavored cigarettes, eliminate use of tanning beds by people under 19 years of age, and lead paint removal programs;
- PERSONAL HEALTH DECISION MAKING: Support of the Family Health Care Decisions Act, which would establish procedures for family members, surrogates and others to make treatment decisions on behalf of patients unable to decide about treatment for themselves.

As a community service to educate voters for the upcoming Presidential election, the League of Women Voters of NYS, along with the Capital Region Local Leagues, presented a pre-election program on October 25th, that provided voters with a thorough, unbiased analysis of both major candidates' proposals that included a perspective from a major area health service provider, Seton Health, an affiliate Ascension Health, the largest U.S. nonprofit health system, on the impact of both proposals on health care delivery.
